Stuart Irwin Meyers
Founder, In Memoriam
(1941–2025)
With a distinguished career spanning more than 50 years, Stuart Irwin Meyers was a
visionary developer, respected entrepreneur, and thoughtful community builder. As the
founder of Meyers Group, and co-founder of two major real estate enterprises before it,
Stuart became one of the most influential figures in Florida’s and West Texas’s modern
real estate development landscape.
Over the course of five decades, Mr. Meyers led the development of market-rate and
affordable rental housing, and a historic hotel. His impact extended beyond individual
buildings—he championed public-private partnerships and crafted housing strategies
that blended social responsibility with private sector excellence.
Mr. Meyers founded three real estate organizations that each left a lasting imprint on the
industry: the Florida Low Income Housing Tax Credit Development arm of Related
Companies in the 1980s; The Cornerstone Group in the 1990s, which he co-founded
and helped grow into one of the nation’s largest fully integrated residential development
and property management firms; and Meyers Group in 2015, with a focus on luxury
market-rate communities and historic mixed-use redevelopment.
Through his leadership, Stuart secured billions of dollars in debt and equity financing
and completed over 20,000 rental units in 70 different communities—often through
innovative combinations of Federal Low Income Housing Tax Credits and Florida’s State
Apartment Incentive Loan (SAIL) program. In 2004, Cornerstone Group was recognized
as the eighth-largest multifamily developer in the United States.
Stuart was known not only for his business acumen but also for his values. He believed
in development as a responsibility—not just an opportunity—and worked closely with
partners, civic leaders, and local communities to deliver long-term value. He brought a
hands-on approach to every stage of a project, from early planning to post-completion
stewardship.
As founder of Meyers Group, he established a culture rooted in integrity, accountability,
and service. His leadership was instrumental in shaping the company’s commitment to
thoughtful, community-driven development—a legacy now carried forward by his
children, Jeffrey Meyers and Wendy Meyers Crabb, who serve as Co-chairs of the
Board.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Stuart was a dedicated father and
grandfather, a philanthropist, and a strong believer in education and civic engagement.
A testament to his devotion to family, Stuart named the firm’s residential communities
“Avery” after his first-born grandchild—honoring not only a name, but the future he
hoped to help build. He earned a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School at the
University of Pennsylvania, an MBA from Columbia Business School, and held CPA
certification from New York State. His philanthropic initiatives live on through The Stuart
I. Meyers Family Foundation, which supports causes related to housing, education, and
local community well-being.
Stuart Irwin Meyers leaves behind more than buildings—he leaves behind a legacy of
impact, principle, and purpose. He is deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues,
employees, and the many communities whose lives were touched by his work.
