The Hotel Paso del Norte’s original building was designed by architect Henry C. Trost and built by Zachary T. White.
When it opened in 1912, construction cost about $1 million. The hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and features a 25-foot-diameter stained glass dome.
Guests reported to have stayed at the hotel include U.S. Gen. John J. “Black Jack” Pershing, Mexican Gen. Álvaro Obregón Salido, famed aviator Amelia Earhart, and then-Vice President Richard Nixon.
Hotel Paso del Norte will be part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, which celebrates boutique hotels that are unique in their design and thoughtful in their spirit. Part of that commitment includes allowing them to keep their unique names.
